Uploading Files to Datastore

Hi All,

I;m trying to move a VM fron One site to another adn it's a large VM (1.2TB).  I am having a tough time for some reason.  I was abler to get on large VMDK file uploaded but the others are not going up.  There is plenty of space in the DS and after a long time it errors out.  I can upload small files but no large ones.  Tried it from the Vcenter server and from teh host both with the same outcome.  Anyone have any idea?

Shrinking Linux VM Created by Converter - P2V

$

Hello All,

I know this has been asked many times. But, every link/discussion I find has a different answer, and I'm not sure which one is the right one. And a lot of them depend on the VM being thin-provisioned, which this is not...

I recently moved to a Windows 10 machine from a OpenSuSE machine. Since Linux is my go to, I decided to convert my old laptop to a VM using the VMWare Standalone Converter and a Trail Version of ESXi 6. Now, I have the VM converted to a Virtual Machine within my ESXi trail VM. The end-game is to export the VM to Workstation Player.

The physical machine that I converted had 300 GB for '/' partition, which I don't need all that space anymore. I was able to get the used partition down to about 40 GB on the VM, and I was hoping to get the partition shrunk down to about, maybe 60 GB (*from currently 300 GB).

I read you can use the Standalone Converter to do v2v to shrink the partition, however in the converter I don't seem to have that option to shrink the disk, from what I can tell.

Here is what the disk looks like inside the VM:

*The partition numbers seem strange because the P2V was a dual-boot windows/linux laptop and I only wanted the Linux partitions...

     sda1 = /boot

     sda6 = /

     sda5 = swap

Could someone help me out for what I need to do to shrink down the ' / ' partition, i.e. sda6?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance,

Matt

New servers, ESXi 6.0 or 6.5?

We will be purchasing 7 new HPE DL380 Gen10 or Dell R740 servers in the next month. In production it will be two servers for server virtualization and three for VDI. The three for VDI will have the nVidia Tesla cards installed. In our DR site there will be two new servers. I am still debating whether to install ESXi 6.0 or 6.5 on these new servers. Here are the considerations:

  1. Thick/C# client versus web client. My understanding is there are actually two versions of the web client:
    1. One web client uses Adobe Flash and is considered buggy and slow. On this forum there is a post entitled "vSphere Web Client SUCKs so bad that my experience managing and supporting VMware has turn to SH**!". This is the single most commented on post ever. There is enormous anger in the community about how bad this web based client is. We are still running ESXi 6.0 on our 5 year old servers and using the C# client
      https://communities.vmware.com/thread/477686
    2. There is an HTML5 client that is considered stable and fast enough. The problem is currently it is missing a bunch of features forcing people to still use the Flash based client often. Rumor has it that when ESXi 6.7 comes out, they will be releasing a full featured version of the HTML5 client.
  2. I did look on VMWare's hardware compatibility site and either ESXi 6.0 or 6.5 are supported on the latest servers from HPE and Dell
  3. The vSphere client (whether C#, Web based Flash, or HTML5) hooks into a vCenter server. Right now our two vCenter servers run under Windows Server 2012 R2. VMWare has ditched this setup going forward and has released a Linux based appliance for vCenter. It would be nice to jump to this Linux appliance but that means going to ESXi 6.5
  4. The desire to be current on our infrastructure which is ESXi 6.5
  5. Lastly, there is still a major bug in ESXi 6.5 even though it was released a year ago. This bug may be fixed by the time we purchase but it may not be. This bug can lead to a pink screen of death on an ESXi host

Suggestions on which way to jump?

vSphere Topology question

I have been studying the 6.5 topology docs a lot lately, but still have some questions. I am looking at doing the following, and wondering at feasibility and/or drawbacks:

  • 2 physical locations
  • 1 vCenter server with embedded PSC in each (since I can now do ELM with embedded)
  • 1 SSO domain
  • 2 SSO sites

My understanding is this configuration will allow replication of policies, tags, permissions, and licenses. Am I missing anything?

In a DR situation if site #1 goes down am I dead in the water? Can I repoint to the other site?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Logitech C920 webcam and a Teradici zero client

Hello,

I am attempting to use a Logitech C920 webcam plugged into a Teradici zero client running on View 7.1. VDI will see the camera and attach to it but the preview window is blank although the audio does work. Has anyone had an luck getting a Logitech webcam connected to a zero client, to work in View? We are also having all sorts of audio issues with dictation on these zero clients. Wishing we had went with thins or with a different brand than Teradici.

patching appstacks with microsoft monthly security patches

What are your current practices for updating existing appstacks with Microsoft  windows security patches ?

For example appstackA has notepad++ version 7.5.6.

Microsoft releases june paches for windows server 2016.

I patch my gold images for linked clones for june patches.

I then poweron my appvolume capture machine and patch it with june patches and snapshot the appvolume capture machine.

I then power on my appvolume capture machine.

Then click update for appstackA and create a "update copy" named appstackA-update.

then provision appstackA-update to appvolume capture machine and reinstall notepad++ version 7.5.6 ?

Strange Host Responsiveness Issues

$

- Recently upgraded hosts to 6.7 and vCenter to 6.7a

- Hosts are 'not responding' in vCenter Server

- Can ping

- Cannot acess web interface or login via SSH

- Can access it via console, but after you enter login information and press enter it freezes (cursor is still blinking)

- If you remove the host from the inventory and shut down a virtual machine on the host it brings everything back online and the host can be re-added to vCenter

- Four identical hosts, has happened on three of the four (twice on one)

- The host that had this issue twice now will not come back after trying the above method and is completely unresponsive at the console

error: customization operation timed out. Pairing state:In pairing...

error under events: Provisioning error occurred for Machine [machinename]: Customization operation timed out

This does not happen to all VM's in this pool. 6 out of 12 vdi's are having this error and are stucked in customizing mode. We are using view - 6.1.0 with 6.1 agent. If a user logs off, the same machine is provisioned again however, if any machine is deleted manually or by reducing the max number of machines in configuration, the machine gets stucked in customizing mode. Any help on this would be helpful. Thanks

High Sierra and Fusion "stuck" keys

$

Hi to all,

inside the Windows VM, sometimes when I strike Ctrl+c, some seconds after I release the key combination it results in typing repeatedly "cccccccccccccc..." or after having struck Ctrl+v it results in "vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv..." and it doesn't stop until I press another key. It happens with the delete key or the tab key, too.

This happens very frequently (an average of once every 2 - 3 minutes, but it can happen twice in a minute or more) but randomly and in combination with a "special key" (i.e. Ctrl, Delete, End, Backslash, etc.) and is VERY, VERY annoying.

Almost every time that this happens, I noticed that when I press the ESC key, it opens up the Windows Start Menu.

To "re-enable" a (temporary) correct working state of the keyboard, I have to repeatedly press ESC, then repeatedly press CTRL, then repeatedly press the Windows key, then repeatedly press the ALT key. After that, I can continue working for a couple of minutes befor it happens again

It started happening as I upgraded to High Sierra (from El Capitan) and to Fusion 10.0.0 (and it's upgrade to 10.0.1) from fusion 8.x.

I later downgraded to Fusion 8.5.8 (ev. upgraded to 8.5.9) to resolve the CAPS LOCK issue, but this one remained, unfortunately.

In the meantime I have upgraded Windows 10 on both my VMs to version 1709 (OS build 16299.64) from Version 1703 (OS build 15063.674), but the issue remains.

This is making me NUTS, I cannot work anymore and I am a bit desperate.

This issue seems only to happen inside the VMs, not in the Mac host.

I already tried switching keyboard with a Mac one (usb), but the problem stays the same.

I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling last version of vmware Tools, with no success

I already tried searching on the internet for a solution, but until now, no tweak has worked for me.

Can someone help me, please?

Host client won’t load on clean install of ESXi 6.5 U1

Hello everyone. I have a standalone server on which I’d like to build a virtual VMware lab. I’ve installed a fully supported, Lenovo customized image of vSphere 6.5 U1, build 7388607, on an internal USB flash drive.

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the vSphere Host client refuses to load in any browser. Strangely, the blue background of the log on page itself loads, but that’s it. There are no errors, no logos of any kind, no fields for entering credentials…nothing. I’ve tried Firefox, Chrome, Edge and Internet Explorer via fully updated (web browsers included) Windows 10 and Windows 7 workstations. No joy.

While I’m able to reach the DCUI via the server’s remote console functionality, without the Host Client, I can’t do much else. Furthermore, since this server isn’t associated with a vCenter server, the vSphere Web Client (Flex) and vSphere Client (HTML5) aren’t available.

Can somebody please help me understand what I’m missing? Perhaps there’s another way I should be attempting to access the host? I’ve Googled the issue quite a bit, but haven’t found anything related to this specific scenario.

Thank you!

Slow vSAN (Nested setup)

Hi,

I have an e200-8d with a nested ESXi setup and configured each of the 3 ESXi hosts with one disk (M.2) and another disk (2.5 SATA HDD 5400rpm).

I configured vSAN to use the M.2 disk for cache and the SATA for capacity on each of the hosts but it is working extremely slow to transfer data to the vsandatastore

I ran the proactive Tests and IOPS were just at 4 and a data transfer to the vsandatastore was just at around 300KB/s

I know this is not officially supported but as an experiment to test vSAN I thought I would get much better performance since I have the M.2 disk as cache?

Thanks

Hi all.I have a question about VMware vSphere: Install, Configure, Manage [V6.5] - On Demand Assessment Test. It has 50 questions.

What happens if I do not pass VMware vSphere: Install, Configure, Manage [V6.5] - On Demand Assessment Test? I do not get a pass for the 2VO-602 exam or just not get a free voucher for 2VO-602?

How passes On Demand Assessment Test ? How many attempts are given to me? What happens if I do not pass it?

Thanks!

Hi,

Running current non-beta VMWare Workstation Player

on a Kubuntu 18.04 64Bit L.T.S. Linux host

with a genuine Windows 10 Pro 64Bit guest.

Have a SEVERE issue with VMWare Workstation Player:

When I shutdown or reboot the Win 10 guest

my Linux host freezes and I am forced to do a hard reset?

I've checked my desktop hardware and it's not that.

I've also checked the Win 10 guest on another desktop and the problem is there too.

I've been using this Win 10 guest for over a year without issues.

Any help would be appreciated as I use the Win 10 guest often...

Thanks!

VMFS datastore doesn't match partition size

I'm on an ESXi 6.5 host using VMFS-6.

I expanded a LUN and tried to increase space on the VMFS datastore to use the new free space. It looks like the underlying partition was re-sized but the VMFS datastore might not have been?

This translated to a size of exactly 16TB. Now using partedUtil to see the underlying partition

partedUtil reports that the partition it's occupying is a full 18.9TB by calculating (last sector - first sector) * 512bytes per sector

I'm not sure what happened during the attempt to increase the datastore size but now the vsphere-client reports that there's no additional empty space to grow the datastore.

Do I need to manually grow the datastore using vmkfstools?

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) - SC Reader not found

I recently bought a Gemalto CT1100 bluetooth smart card reader which I intend to use with my Windows 10 under VMWare Fusion 10.1.2. I have a 2016 macbook pro with only USB-C which makes me want to use bluetooth stuff to get rid o adapters. My OS is High Sierra.

I installed the Gemalto Bluetooth Device Manager (GBDM) )on both the Mac OS and in my Windows 10 virtual machine. It se to work fine on the host OS but not in my virtual machine. GDBM software instantly claim "bluetooth is not supported" and I can't seem to find the reader in the bluetooth list in Windows 10.

The SC reader is found as seen in the picture below.

The following picture is from the event log in my virtual machine.

Anyone who have had similar issues or got an idea on what this could be?

I recently installed PowerChute Network Shutdown Appliance to monitor my cluster and noticed that now my hosts will show a "Find by IP" task every two minutes under recent tasks. I contacted APC but have yet to hear back.

Here's a screenshot:

Anyone seem this behavior before and if so, is there any action that I need to take or is this expected since the appliance is now constantly monitoring everything?

Import / Export esxi network config for re-install or upgrade hosts

I am about to embark on a quite large host upgrade. We have 60-80 Vlan configurations. Typically I just run a script from the .csv file and it will import the vlans and switches. However , I still have to configure the physical adapters , iscsi etc. This is simple, but looking to streamline my process since I will be working with 300+ host. Just trying to work smarter. I have tried powershell scripts but doesnt seem to work. Is there a utility or application / fling that will back up my network config, and that I can push back out once my re-install / upgrade is complete on that host? Eager to hear the solutions.

Opening unsubmitted Service Catalog requests causes a timeout because of too much data bindings

$

We've had some problems with opening 'unsubmitted' (that is only saved, not submitted) service catalog requests and have deduced it is because of a large number of data bindings. Our masks have 20-30 input fields, which are heavily dependent on each other - most of the input fields are data bound to another or even DB/API.

The masks work when we are just filling out the fields, but it timeouts when we try to load the whole unsubmitted request (we've raised the timeout to 5 minutes but it takes longer than that).

We cache data where we can (DB, API results..) but due to the nature of data bindings with each change triggering further data bindings this does not help.

How can we prevent data bindings triggering so many times? (maybe just preventing data bindings triggering for empty fields)

I'm looking for advice, similar issues and solutions on this problem.

(currently using vRA 7.1)

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to convert CentOS 6 VM from Xen 6 to vCenter 5.5 by VMware Converter Standalone 6.2

Everything is ok but the percentage is always 1%. When I opened the log, I got an error:

"error: class Vmacore::Ssl::SSLHandshakeTimeoutException(SSL Exception: Operation was canceled)"

After I try to increase SSLHandshakeTimeout in /etc/vmware/hosts/config.xml and /etc/vmware/rhttpproxy/config/xml from default 20000 miliseconds to 120000 miliseconds, the error is still happened. Somebody help me to fix this error, please!

My log file is attached below

Thank everyone!
