Scrolling issue in GNOME (Ubuntu 18.04) when non-default keyboard layout is chosen

$

In Ubuntu 18.04, in the GNOME shell, when a different keyboard layout is selected than the default of the OS, scrolling in Windows guests (Linux guests not tested) is erratic. This results in randomly scrolling up or down when the mouse is moved in the VM in some scrollable panes, such as the start menu. This occurs on all guests, including those in an ESXi cluster, and even in the installer of the guest OS. This lead me to believe this is a host-guest interaction issue, and unrelated to the VM itself.

I have narrowed this problem down to the keyboard layout selector in the upper right corner. It only occurs in the GNOME shell, which is the default in Ubuntu 18.04, and can be reproduced across several systems using VMware Workstation for Linux 14.1.2. You can reproduce this issue as follows:

1. Install Ubuntu 18.04 as host OS

2. Make sure you login using the GNOME shell (Unity works as expected)

3. Add seven different input methods (one additional would be fine, but we are testing here). It does not matter which exactly you pick

4. Start up a Windows 10 guest OS (again, does not matter, but for testing purposes this is fine)

5. In the Guest OS, go to the Start menu, and try to scroll in the 'All apps' section (not all scrolling is broken, but the start menu is)

When the first option in the keyboard layout selector is chosen, this works as expected.

When the second option in the keyboard layout selector is chosen, when the mouse is scrolled or moved, the menu will scroll UP immediately. Scrolling down using keyboard works, but when the mouse is moved again, it will scroll up immediately.

When the third option in the keyboard layout selector is chosen, the menu will scroll DOWN immediately.

This will repeat: when the fourth option is chosen, it works as expected. The fifth option will scroll UP. The sixth option will scroll DOWN. The seventh option will work as expected, etc.

The workaround is simple: simply set the input selector to the first option when erratic scrolling occurs, but I believe this bizarre interaction bug should be fixed.

Also posting it here in the case someone else encounters this issue.

Vmotion VM with RDMs fails with disk not found

$

I tried to migrate a VM with RDMs to a new host and get errors like "Disk 8 not found, disk 10 not found, etc".  These are Cisco UCS blades using the same profiles.  The storage on the back end seems to be zoned correctly.  If I look on the storage adapter of both hosts, they seem to show the same devices. I'm not sure if what shows up as devices on the HBA include the RDMs or, are they just the regular VMFS volumes?  Is there a way to tell?

From the command line on a host, is there a way to display the RDMs that are zoned to that host?  I know I can see them on the source host but, is there a way to see them on the destiation host before doing a Vmotion?

Boot camp partition and SAS disk and other performance tuning?

$

Hi Guys,

I have not used VMware Fusion in many years (last version I own is v7, but never used it much due to crappy performance). I have mostly been using Parallels for our Windows development in a VM, as it is way faster than VMware. However due to the some stupid time sync issues that Parallels has, I have ben trying VMware again to see how it compares and it is remarkable how much slower it is than Parallels.

So my question is what can be done to speed things up. From my simple testing the core issues with performance in VMware revolve around two things:

1. Disk performance

2. Video performance

In years past when I created VMware machines for development purposes I would also use the SAS controller rather than the IDE/SATA one as we all knew it was a lot faster under VMware Fusion. However I don't see any way to change the bootcamp disk controller type for boot camp partitions. Is that even possible?

What other options are there to improve the disk performance under VMware?

Video performance is the other problem but I have played with all the video options (turning on and off 3D, changing the memory config etc) but nothing really helps it. Graphics is noticeably slower in many applications and you can see the difference in screen redraw speed in applications like SmartGit and VisualStudio.

To outline the core issue, when I start my VM it literally takes probably another 15-20s for the system to boot into the same state as VMware, applications like SmartGit launch noticeably slower (like taking 2x as long to start), and Visual Studio takes considerably longer to launch (and it is slow enough already!). To test the theory I timed how long it would take to do a full build of my solution under Parallels and VMware with the exact same CPU count and memory config (6 CPU, 12G memory). Under parallels, my solution would consistently build in 23s. Under VMware, it takes about 32-33s, which is a HUGE difference in performance.

I would really like to be able to continue using VMware to avoid the issues I have with Parallels at the moment, but it's pretty difficult with the performance being this abysmal.

Any suggestions on how to tune it?

Microsoft Edge and Persona Management issues

We are struggling with Microsoft modern apps and Persona Management. We get working all what we need but Microsoft Edge is a beast...

If the folder "AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe" is roam with PM, Edge open and close immediately. Something seems to prevent Edge to be modified by an external process. The copy procedure from Persona share to user profile at login time seems to break something.

Have you figure out how to use Edge with PM?

Hi,

I am trying to deploy EC2 instances to multiple availability zones using vRA.

As part of the deployment I want to deploy EC2 instances in round robin to multiple availability zone.

example

instance1 goes  to availability zone 1

instance2 goes to availability zone 2

is there any way to achieve this using vRA or by updating property  /machine/properties/__amazon.subnetId : using vRO?

Thanks

network core change

We are switching out all of our core switches this weekend (from cisco to HP). The current hosts have no redundancy basically one nic to a common switch. I have added a 4 port network card to each host (4) and pre-configured vSwitches (2 ports for mgmt, 2 for vm network, etc). The 10G iscsi ports & cables to the SAN will not be touched.

My question is when moving to the new core switch can I simply connect a new cable to a new vswitch vm network port - let it sync & then remove the current cable?

Get vRA Identifiers for AWS Subnets and Security Groups

I have an AWS Blueprint that I am trying to call from an XAAS Blueprint.

The AWS blueprint is expecting an integer value for the security group and subnet parameters. I am assuming this is some kind of identifier that vRA uses. Passing in the amazon id's for the 2 entities does not work. I cannot seem to find this vRA identifier for these properties.

For example...

vRA 7.4 + Custom Form -> Custom Properties Values not Updated in vRO

$

Hello Guys!

I have a strange issue with vRA, Custom Forms, vRO Workflow and Custom Properties:

I created a Blueprint with Custom Forms an a few Custom Properties which are used in an vRO Workflow. The deployment process works as expected with my full admin vRA User so i published the Blueprint to the Users. The Users have only the "Users" and the "Shared access" Role in the Business Group. The first it's-not-working comes quite fast so time for a debugging session... The Custom Properties Values where correctly set in the vRA Request but the Properties Values are not passed to the internal vRO -> They are shown in the vRO "payload" but with empty Values. If i add the Users to the "Support" Role of the Business Group the Values were correctly set but this is not an acceptable workaround.

Hope anyone can help and its not a "works-as-designed"

Thanks!

Robert

Hi everybody,

I want to make a new workflow for remove entry DNS by powershell script. First, I write the script task to see and load some variables that I need, after that I want make a output variable (argument) to build a perfect syntax for the workflow "External script Powershell" in line Argument.

When I launch the script, I have a big issue with many error. Sorry at the moment I don't have the output error. But I want to be sur if my code is good and I don't have errors in my script.

var vmProperties = machine.get("properties");

var machine = payload.get("machine") ;

var computerName = machine.get("name");

var partenaire = payload.machine.properties.get("XX.Partenaire_ID");

var os = payload.machine.properties.get("XX.OS_ID");

var trigramme = payload.machine.properties.get("XX.TrigrammeApplication");

var fonction = payload.machine.properties.get("XX.Fonction");

var env = payload.machine.properties.get("XX.Environnement");

var ip = payload.machine.properties.get("VirtualMachine.Network0.Address");

System.log("NIVEAU 1");

var key;

}

System.log("NIVEAU 2");

var key2;

I have successfully created a Windows XP Professional VM, but can't seem to access the internet at all. I tried the following:

  • Turn off Windows Firewall on VM client
  • Turn off Windows 10 firewall, virus protection etc.. on host computer
  • Tried both NAT and Bridged network connection
    • with Bridged I am able to at least ping ftp.microsoft.com succefully, but still not able to connect to website
  • Added website to list of trusted sites on Windows XP - and have trusted sites as Low

Any suggestions?

Possible to Export ESXi 6.5 U2 Host for Import to Workstation 12 or 14?

$

I've tried everything I can think of but can't get a CentOS 7 host to export from ESXi 6.5 U2 to VMware Workstation 12.5.9 or 14.1.1. Things I tried:

- Just exporting the OVF and manually fixing the pvscsi error (edit the file and change it from VirtualSCSI to lsiLogic)

     - That allowed the machine to boot, but it eventually hung during the OS load

- Exporting the vmx with the vCenter Converter tool

     - Same as before

I can't find any KB articles documenting which versions of ESXi are supported to export to which versions of Workstation, so I can't tell if any of this is supposed to work or not.

Hi all,

Having a strange issue with a 6.2 vSAN POC cluster.

I'm trying to remove unassociated objects using objtool however I'm getting the following:

[root@hostname:~] /usr/lib/vmware/osfs/bin/objtool delete -u 9588c45a-d461-21e3-669d-7845c4ed50c6 -f -v 10

Opening vsan namespace control node

Marshaling delete arguments

Issuing delete ioctl

object deletion ioctl failed: Operation already in progress

object delete error: Failure

This is run on the host shown to the be owner of the object from vsan.object_info, running objtool delete against this object from other hosts gives:

[root@hostname:~] /usr/lib/vmware/osfs/bin/objtool delete -u 9588c45a-d461-21e3-669d-7845c4ed50c6 -f -v 10

Any ideas on how to clean these objects up?

Doubts

Hi All.

I'm studying to retry VCAP Design 6.5 (I did not pass in the first time), and I've some doubts about some topics that I can't understand well, even reading the technical docs. I appreciate anyone that can help me:

  1. If I have 2 Data Centers, each one with a vCenter instance, and I'd like to migrate both to vCenter 6.5, but now using a SINGLE SSO DOMAIN, what is the correct migration path? And what is the correct method if I decide to keep with 2 SSOs, and link them with Enhanced Linked Mode?
  2. VCSA could be upgraded using Update Manager? Or will be a manual operation? Because I know Update Manager can upgrade Virtual Appliances, but I'm not sure if VCSA is included.
  3. SQL Servers with Always On Availability Group supports vSphere Snapshots?
  4. The best configuration for a VM, considering performance is allow VM to run in the same physical node, avoiding non-local memory access. But, how I can find the physical NUMA capacity? Sometimes I just know the CPU and Memory resources available in ESXi host (Ex: 2 physical processors with 10 cores per processor and 128 GB of RAM), so how I can figure out the capacity of the each NUMA node? If I understand well, I need to split memory capacity by number of physical CPUs (that means, 128/2 = each node with 1 PCPU, 5 LCPUs and 64 GB of RAM). Am I correct?
  5. How I configure my VM to achieve the best performance in each NUMA node?
  6. I read again the topic about functional and non-functional requirements, and the first one is more like "business" requirements and the second one is technical requirements, that means, what the design NEED TO DO and HOW WILL DO. That's it?

Thank you!

OVA Import Fails on 14.1.2: "Failed To Open OVF Descriptor"

$

I have an OVA file I created with Workstation 14 a couple months ago.  A colleague tried to deploy it using the latest version of Workstation Pro (14.1.2), and he tells me the OVA fails to import with the error "Failed to Open OVF Descriptor".  He's tried several workarounds he found via Google using the OVFTool, but the problem persists.  So after he reached out to me I installed the latest update to 14.1.2.  Sure enough, now I can't import the OVA that I created using an earlier version of Workstation 14.  Hardware compatibility is Workstation 10.x, OS is Windows Server 2016 (Dataserver edition with GUI), and it worked importing into ESXi 6.0 using the vCenter client as well as my earlier version of 14 (I can't remember if it was 14.0 or 14.1, but I can install older versions if it's helpful for troubleshooting).  On top of that, I decided the quick fix would be to export the VM again (from my newly installed Workstation 14.1.2), and re-import.  Guess what...  The OVA i *just* exported fails to import in the Workstation Pro that exported it.

Any advice?  It looks like our fix is to give up on updating Workstation, but maybe someone has a workaround or VMWare can fix what they broke in this release.

Schedule Right-Sizing Task

Does vROPS have the ability to schedule VM resource changes?

I need to increase the memory on numerous Windows VMs (hot-add is not enabled), but the only downtime opportunity is during automated monthly OS-patching windows. I'd much rather be asleep at those times.

I know vROPS has the ability to set a VM's resources and reboot if necessary (Ive used this many times), but if would be terrific if this could be scheduled natively. I know how to script this action using PowerCLI and trigger it using Windows Task Scheduler, but Im wondering if Im just not seeing this functionality in vROPS. If not, I think this could be an awesome feature.

vRO Custom Action - Excluding More than One Datastore

$

Hello,

We currently have a vRO (Shell Generator) of sorts to provision shells within our environment that can then be used to run through the MDT build sequence to build servers.  Currently our custom action will pull all datastores from a host in a selected cluster, exclude any datastore that has the name preface of 'SU'.  Once that is done a datastore is selected based off a bit of math that will take into account the new VM size and ensure a datastore is selected with sufficient space to build the shell.  I am by no means an expert in vRO javascript and admittedly I need to learn more about this language.  Can someone assist in adding in the fact we want to exclude any datastore that has the preface of 'SU' AND 'LD'?  This would then exclude any datastore from being selected as "Special Use" or "Local Disk".  Below is the snippet, thanks in advance and much appreciated!

}

dsarray.sort(function(a, b){

return parseFloat(b.summary.freeSpace) - parseFloat(a.summary.freeSpace);

});

return dsarray;

function addDatastore(datastores) {

for (var i in datastores) {

if (keys.get(datastores[i].sdkId) == null) {

keys.put(datastores[i].sdkId, datastores[i].sdkId);

if (datastores[i].name.match('SU')) {

continue;

} else {

var rawCap = (datastores[i].summary.capacity); //raw capacity of the datastore

var cap = Math.round(rawCap / 1024 / 1024 /1024); //rounded capacity in GB

var usableCap = (90 / 100) * cap; //90% of capacity

var rawpSpace = VcPlugin.getProvisionedSpace(datastores[i]); //gets raw provisioned space

var pSpace = Math.round(rawpSpace / 1024 / 1024 /1024); //rounded provisioned space in GB

var disk1size = Math.round(SysDiskSize)

var disk2size = Math.round(AppDiskSize)

var vmemsize = Math.round(MemSize / 1024)

var useableSpace = (usableCap - pSpace - disk1size - disk2size - vmemsize ); //Usable capacity minus provisioned and disk&ram

if (useableSpace > 50){ //any datastore that has more than 50GB usable is returned

dsarray.push(datastores[i]);

}

}

}

}

}
