Question

Hey all, I have downloaded an iso image of the ESXi 6.7 and I installed on my machine. I got a Vmware web host that can build the virtual machine on it.  Is that if I upload my data to this virtual machine, is that  my data is secure in this web host? Is that anybody can see this data?

Internet Sharing over VMWare Adapter

Hello,

I have installed VMWare Fusion into my MacOS High Sierra 10.13. It's created two virtual network Adapter called vmnet1 and vmnet8. But I can't find how to share my MacOS internet connection (from Wi-Fi) through those adapter with my VMWare guest machine. Under Internet Sharing Menu in System Preferences, there is no option for vmnet1 or vmnet8. My Wi-Fi adapter shows as en0 with 'ifconfig' command. So I actually want to share Internet connection of en0 inteface (wi-fi) with vmnet1 or vmnet8 interface.

Thanks in advance.

Minimum priveleges needed for a service account to take VM snapshots

Hello,

We have a request for a service account to be able to take and manage snapshots on a particular cluster.

We want to create a new role for this.

Looking at the vmware documentation, it looks like the service account will need the following permissions:

datastore.allocate space  - on the datastore

snapshot management  - on the vm or folder

Are there any other permissions needed in order to accomplish this ?

Thanks!

Best Regards,

getAllVirtualMachines problems

In troubleshooting another workflow that takes hours to complete, I created a simple workflow that takes an sdkConnection as an input, and does a getAllVirtualMachines().

VMs is an Array/VC:VirtualMachine here, output to an attribute:

VMs = sdk.getAllVirtualMachines();
System.debug(VMs.length + " VMs found.");

This logs the length of the array in a second or two, but then the VMs attribute remains undefined, with the vco server load average ramping up, and server.log spamming this for seemingly every VM:

2018-06-15 11:36:05.434-0500 [taskExecutor-8] ERROR {} [ObjectUpdateParser] assign disabledMethod -> VirtualMachine::vm-54649
2018-06-15 11:36:05.434-0500 [taskExecutor-8] ERROR {} [ObjectUpdateParser] Ignore error and continue with others updates
java.lang.RuntimeException: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Cannot find managedMethod with name: MountToolsInstallerImage        at com.vmware.o11n.plugin.vsphere.pc.ObjectUpdateParser.applyProperyChange(ObjectUpdateParser.java:65)        at com.vmware.o11n.plugin.vsphere.pc.ObjectUpdateParser.processObjectUpdate(ObjectUpdateParser.java:112)        at com.vmware.o11n.plugin.vsphere.pc.CacheUpdate.processUpdateSet(CacheUpdate.java:110)        at com.vmware.o11n.plugin.vsphere.pc.CacheUpdate$UpdateSetHandler.nextUpdateSet(CacheUpdate.java:171)        at com.vmware.o11n.plugin.vsphere.pc.CacheUpdate.run(CacheUpdate.java:66)        at java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor.runWorker(ThreadPoolExecutor.java:1142)        at java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor$Worker.run(ThreadPoolExecutor.java:617)        at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:748)

It eventually threw this in the vco client:

[2018-06-15 10:56:06.041] [D] 2541 VMs found.

[2018-06-15 11:00:28.113] [E] Workflow:Get all virtual machines / Scriptable task (item1) : ch.dunes.model.type.ConvertorException: Unable to convert object, 'Stub: moRef = (ManagedObjectReference: type = VirtualMachine, value = vm-704346, serverGuid = null), binding =https://fqdn.com/sdk' plugin exception reason : convertToResult() --> Finder 'VC:VirtualMachine' : unexpected error 'ch.dunes.model.sdk.SDKFinderException: convertToResult() --> Finder 'VC:VirtualMachine' : unable to invoke read method : 'name''

Is this supposed to work? I think the error in the client is because a VM was deleted mid-way through the run?

I need to turn on proactive HA functionality but I am not getting option to turn it ON.

I have followed the following steps:-

1. I have created the datacenter and  cluster

2. Added hosts inside cluster.

3.Turn on vsphere DRS.

4. click on cluster->vsphere Availablity->edit

But here I am getting only 4 options(failures and Response, Admission control,Heartbeat datastores,Advanced options) here.

I am using vsphere 6.5 HTML verison.

VMs hang after Windows patches

$

Hello All, I administrator 4 vCenter 6U2a sites (VCSA with external PSC using enhanced link mode between sites). Environment one, site A communicates with site B. Environment two, site C communicates with site D.

Beginning around January Environment one (Site A and Site B) started having Windows VMs hang after Windows patching. SCCM is used to push the patches to the VMs and the VMs had worked properly for the last two years. I have reviewed the nearly 30 times that this has occurred since January and the event has only repeated twice on a single vm and only twice on a particular host. All affected VMs are Windows 2012R2. In any SCCM Windows patching event only 3 or so VMs will be affected.

When the VM hangs I can not reboot, shutdown or perform any function via vSphere to engage the VM. Other VMs on the same host that have also been patched are not affected. Currently the only corrective actions are to either SSH into the host and find the world id and kill the VM or attempt to place the host in to maintenance mode (never completes due to hung VM) and then reboot the host via vCenter. VMs not affected by this issue migrate from the host without issue. Once the VM is released from the host it was on, they power on normally and finish the Windows patching process.

Environment two began having the same issue in April, I believe it was due to some patches being delayed or patching not occurring. I have logged into all VMs and reviewed the Windows patches installed at the time of failure and no commonality was found. At most only 8 VMs over the last 6 months failed when a particular patch was installed.

I have reviewed logs on both Windows and ESXi/vCenter but found nothing. I have had a ticket open with VMware support since January and no progress has been made.

Are any of you seeing this in your environments? Sorry but due to company policy I can not post any logs. Any and all help is appreciated.

VMWare Remote Console 10 start fullscreen from command line

Hello, I'm trying to launch VMWare Remote Console 10 from the command line given a vmrc url to use but I want the virtual machine to start in full screen mode. Currently, the remote virtual machine starts in windowed mode and you have to press the Fullscreen button on the menu. There is also the option of using a keystroke to go into fullscreen which is "Ctrl+Alt+Enter" (or "Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Enter" if the Shift preference is set). I know in the older versions of Remote Console there was a command line parameter that could be used to start the machine in fullscreen mode but I have not been able to find anything like that with this version.

Here is the command I'm using to launch the Remote Console 10 and connect to a remote virtual machine:

"C:/Program Files (x86)/VMware/VMware Remote Console/vmrc.exe" vmrc://clone:cst-524a37be-0534-578b-bbc3-b50712a60577--tp-B1-C9-2E-0C-9D-81-3E-D7-7C-B7-C9-60-7F-8E-51-F0-DD-06-3E-30@10.10.28.12/?moid=4

Here is the old command for an older version of remote console that launches in fullscren:

"c:/VMRC/vmware-vmrc.exe" -u root -p password@210 -h 10.10.28.14 -X "[Datastore 1] Test VM.vmx"

You will notice the -X flag indicates to start in full screen mode. I'm looking for an option similar to that with the new version of VMWare Remote Console 10. Any information is helpful.

What is shell load time in Logon Monitor

Hi

UEM 9.3

Horizon 9.4

Windows 10 1703

App volumes 2.13.3

I finally have a semi acceptable windows 10 image, logging in around 36 seconds, with basically no user applied gpos. Folder redirection is being done through UEM, including AppData(sigh... this is a requirement I have to follow).The longest delay is Shell Load time, and I don't always see this in the other forum posts. The flings site says

Shell load time is a custom calculation within VMLM.

Where can I start to determine what this is. I'd really love to get these logon times under 30 seconds, so shaving 6-7 seconds off that shell load time would be awesome.Without app volumes its around 6-8 seconds, and the total logon time drops around 8 seconds to 28 seconds.

Any idea what this means

WARNING: NetDVS: 567: portAlias is NULL

it comes up in the checks we do daily sometimes, but there isn't much information on this. From what I can find this is related to a Distrubted switch but we aren't using one in our enviornment yet. That doesn't rule out that someone created one and deleted it, but right now there isn't one in vcenter.

VM migration between vSphere host clusters

Hello,

I have two vSphere host clusters in one Provider VDC. I need to separate tenant virtual machine to particular vSphere cluster based on guest OS.

Question:

1. Is it possible to use migration on vCenter layer? (In my lab works good, after vMotion I can see virtual machine in correct resource pool in vCloud Director)

2. How is possible to run migration task from vCloud Director layer (not from UI)? I am using PowerCli for this task and I can't find this function.

Thanks.

Access to Shared Public Catalogs to non-Org Admins

Can someone remind me what the minimum permissions are to allow non-Org admins to be able to see Public Catalogs.

I have some ISOs shared via public catalog between two distinct orgs, and I don't want to subscribe and cause them to clone inside the same datacenter.

Just trying to sort out what's the minimum extra privileges I would have to give to an App Author to be able to see the public shared catalogs.

I know the sharing works, as the Org Admin role can see the Public Shared catalogs and insert media to a VM without error.

vRA 7.3 - vSphere Endpoint Creation

$

I just finished my new installation of vRA 7.3 in my lab environment. I am having and issue while adding the vSphere Endpoint (vSphere 5.5) to the platform. This is the error:

System.Net.WebException: The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send. ---> DynamicOps.Common.Client.UntrustedCertificateException: Certificate is not trusted (RemoteCertificateChainErrors)

Already followed the next KB VMware Knowledge Base importing the vCenter Server certificate to the Trusted root store of all the IAAS machines, including DEMs and Agent. But the error is still the same.

Also the certificate that i am using in vSphere is self signed.

By the way i also have connected to the same vSphere Platform a vCAC platform in version 6.2.

Any ideas?

Problems with suspending the guest

I use VMware Workstation Player 14.1.2 build-8497320 on Windows 10. The guest is a Fedora 28.

When I want to suspend the guest, it doesn't work.

I click "Suspend Guest" from the menu, confirm with "Yes" then the WMware window disappears for some time and pops up again. The VM is still running but Fedora lost its network connection.

Here is the part of vmware.log related to this attempted suspend:

2018-06-06T10:43:55.490+02:00| vmx| I125: Tools: Changing running status: 2 => 1.

Does anybody else experience this issue?

What can I do to make it work again?

I think (but I'm not sure) that this behavior started after upgrading to 14.1.2
