Options for deploying a vCenter VM template (stored in content library) to VMWare WorkStation Pro VM

Hi folks,

 

I would like to know the "best practice" of deploying a vCenter VM template that is stored in the content library (1st PC) to a VMWare WorkStation VM (2nd PC). The vCenter content library is served by a FreeNAS VM.

As I understand it, from vCenter web client, I cannot deploy a vCenter VM template directly to a Workstation VM because it only controls ESXi Hosts.

 

After research, I believe that VMWare vCenter Converter Standalone or Converter Standalone is the tool I'll need (as opposed to the OVF tool).

Steps:

  • on the vCenter PC, install Converter Standalone (client-server).
  • on the Workstation PC, install Converter Standalone (client).
  • on either vCenter PC, or Workstation PC, use Converter Standalone to convert the VM template on vCenter Host to a VM on Workstation Host.
    Does it make a difference whether I run the convert command from the vCenter PC, or the Workstation PC ?
    I know in Windows that it's more efficient to run the copy command from the target PC and have it "pull" the data from the source.
  • I'm guessing the number of deployments I can do in concurrently depends on the load it places on the network?

 

Is it as simple as that?

KVM on ESXi causes segmentation faults in guest VMs with more than one vCPU

This post is related to this one:

OpenStack (KVM/QEMU) in vSphere - Occasionally segfaults occurring in OpenStack VMs with more than one vCPU configured

 

I was able to narrow down the problem described above. I have setup a vSphere VM based on Ubuntu 16.04 and installed KVM. I defined several guest VMs based on different Linux operating systems. When you add more than one vCPU to one  KVM guest VM, you occasionally receive segmentation faults in different processes unforeseeable where and when. The probability increases when you add more vCPUs and when the hosting machine is under high load.

 

I know that nested virtualization is not officially support, but we are so close. The scenario can be reproduced easily.

 

Is someone out there, who can support me getting KVM properly running?

Copying Across Remote Sessions Fails

I have a couple servers that are running on the same VM Box. If I open a remote session to two of the servers and try to copy files from one remote session window to another remote session window the servers/box crash. Any thoughts?

Cannot login to vRA tenant through Cloud Client (4.5)

Hey all - have to remove orphaned VMs from a tenant vRA.  Tenant is called aecio.com by "name" in administration.  I can log into https://vra-address-fqdn/vcac/org/aecio as jkensy@aecio.com from the webui and this account is a full admin account.

 

I am using cloud client 4.5 and doing

CloudClient>vra login userpass --user jkensy@aecio.com --tenant aecio.com --server vra-address-fqdn

vRA Password for jkensy@aecio.com: *******************

Error: Failed to Login to vRA server https://vra-address-fqdn, tenant=aecio.com with username jkensy@aecio.com.

I've tried local accounts as well..  nothing is permitted to login.  I am able to login to the --tenant vsphere.local just fine, but the inventory isn't in that client.

 

Can anyone provide some insight?  Thanks!  BTW - this is vRA 7.3.0

I am experiencing a new option <None> in drop-down and Yes/No field of vRA 7.3.1 after migrating the environment from 6.2.5.
I want to remove this option so that only pre-defined list of variables gets filled without <None>.

Question :

We had to replace a drive on 1 host in our VSAN cluster. We have 4 hosts. After successfully replacing the drive, then recreating the disk group on this host, all indicators show good. No pending alerts, etc. However, the VSAN datastore size does not reflect the re-created disk group on this host. Did a re-scan of storage on this host only (not a rescan on the cluster). But the VSAN datastore still is not re-adding this storage to the total datastore size. This host is still in maintenance mode. Perhaps taking it out of maintenance mode is required for VSAN to re-add the storage?

ESXi automated KS install with EFI Secure Boot - skipping execution of 001.firstboot_001

I am preforming an Automated install of ESXi 6.5 on a server which has EFI Secure Boot enable.  The /efi/boot/boot.cfg and using the extra flags on mkisofs/genisoimage created the customer esxi ISO.

The ISO boots and uses the KS file is located on a NFS share, but after the installation completed none of the customer configuration has been applied.

 

Checking the kickstart.log file it shows

     INFO UEFI Secure Boot Enabled, skipping execution of /var/lib/vmware/firstboot/001.firstboot_001

The file is present in /var/lib/vmware/firstboot/ and contains a copy of the %firstboot section of the KS.

 

I have not found any KB or blogs that show this issue.

Is there something extra that needs to be added to the Kickstart file to allow the firstboot script to run when using secure boot?

Hi all,

 

I'm new with Cloud Director and PowerCLI and I would like connect my vCD to create some stuffs.  But when I try to connect my vCD, I receive the following error:

Connect-CisServer The remote server returned an error: (406) Not Acceptable.. vmware

 

Executed command :

Connect-CIsServer -server xyz.com

 

Any idea is welcome...

Update RAW disk space without shutdown the VM

I have problem to view space disk capacitie when I add new space to RAW disk. I have to rescan storage and shutdown the VM. Once the VM is closed, the space capacitie is updated.

There is any solution to update the capacitie of RAW disk without shutdown the VM.

 

I'v tested this, but I'm not able to update the space if I don't shutdown the VM  :

To manually refresh the storage information:

  1. Log in to the VMware vSphere Web Client.
  2. Select the ESXi host in which the virtual machine is registered.
  3. Right-click on the host and select All vCenter Server Actions > Rescan storage.
  4. Log in to the host as root using the console or SSH.
  5. Run this command to list the virtual machines currently registered to the host:

    vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms

  6. Make a note of the vm-id listed for the virtual machine with the RDM that was increased in size.
  7. Run this command to reload the virtual machine information:

    vim-cmd vmsvc/reload 'vm-id'

    where vm-id is the virtual machine ID noted in Step 6.

IOMMU fault type 5

Hi,

 

I've encountered an issue on ESXi 6.5 U1 where my vm would just power off randomly. The error i'm getting on the event log is VMware ESX unrecoverable error: (vmx) PCI passthru device 0000:86:02.0 caused an IOMMU fault type 5 at address 0x10d24a000). After that, any vm with that pcie device would not power on. Has anyone encountered this before? or does anyone know what IOMMU fault type 5 relates to?

I was trying to upgrade my esxi host from 5.5 to 6.0 and got the following error -

 

Conflicting_VIBS error: Vibs on the host are conflicting with the vibs in the metadata. Remove the conflicting VIBS or use image builder to create a custom iso providing newer versions of the conflicting vibs.

Active directory authentication

I was trying to enable Active Directory authentication on my v1.2 skyline appliance.

It seems to take the settings (there is a weird UI bug on that settings page where I will change the values, Hit Save, and receive an error that nothing has changed on the page)

After applying the settings I attempt to login to the collector with a member of the AD group that I granted access and I get an invalid credentials error.

 

Does the appliance have the ability to connect to more than one DC?

Is there a log on the appliance I can look at to see what is preventing the auth?

Using Auto-Deploy as part of Vulnerability Management

Our security team are all over us around patching of ESXi 6.x hosts. We are a small team (2 people) with 45 ESXi hosts to manage. Worse still, some clusters only have 1 hosts due to guest software licensing restrictions (oracle!). Regardless, we have to patch the hosts. Now, we could use the 'normal' methodology:

 

  • Use VUM to evacuate VMs, patch and reboot hosts. If issues, roll back patches
  • Repeat

 

So this seems time consuming to me for 2 reasons:

  • time taken need to reboot
  • time taken to back out patch if need be

 

I guess I could script up the whole thing using VCO but again, time I don't have ....

 

So, one other technology that caught my eye was auto-deploy. I was thinking it might be possible to do the following:

 

  • patch an offline image with patches
  • auto-deploy image to ESXi hosts
  • Rollback simply boot from old image

 

Anyone doing something similar or see any blockers here?

Account not entitled for Skyline

I received an email this afternoon letting me know that my company was accepted into the Skyline program. I followed the instructions and deployed the appliance without issue.

 

When I try to link my "my.vmware.com" account with Skyline, it says that my account is not entitled. Can you please help me get entitled? We've been looking forward to testing out this feature.
