I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 that I'm attempting to P2V with converter, but I'm getting some odd results I was hoping folks could help me with. The conversion itself succeeds and in a reasonable timeframe, boots properly, and all that good stuff, but when I go to log in to it, I can log in, but the explorer shell won't launch. Network services like file sharing work, RDP works (with the same explorer issues though) etc. just explorer being weird.
Specifically what I see is the desktop background appears, I can launch taskmgr which allows me to launch applications, install vmware tools, etc, all w/o problem, it's JUST explorer that won't launch. I have tried launching it from taskmgr's run dialog as well, nothing. Launching it from the shell and capturing the return code shows it exits with status code 0 which doesn't give me any hints either. Any idea what could be causing this weird behavior? Technically, the migrated server should work as such, but if explorer's bugging out, I'm afraid of what else may be bugging out. I've tried the P2V process 3 times with the same results using the following configurations. In all cases, converter was installed directly on the OS to be migrated.
Converter v 5.1
Hardware V9
Resizing drives
Changing CPU/RAM count
Customize Guest enabled
Converter v 5.0.1
Hardware V7
No drive changes
No CPU/RAM changes
Customize Guest enabled
Converter v 5.0.1
Hardware V7
No drive changes
No CPU/RAM changes
Customize Guest disabled
PS: It looks like I set up this account ages ago w/ a random username, probably when I got frustrated with all the ones I tried being taken. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to change it. Is there a way to fix the username or a process to delete the account so I can get a useful username? Now that we're using VMWare I'd like to be able to participate in the community, but a username like the one I have at the moment makes it harder to communicate with folks. Thanks!
