SNMPD instability on ESXi 6.7

Hello everyone,

Since I upgraded to vCenter server 6.7 and ESXi 6.7 I seem to have SNMPd instability issues. LibreNMS is polling my hypervisors for monitoring, and SNMPd crashes at least once a day on all ESXi hosts. Does anyone else see this behaviour and what can I do to stabilize them? I took the alerting off the monitoring because it is giving us at least 25 false positives a day now.

HA not being disabled at host remediation

I recently upgraded my esxi5.5 install to a new 6.5 VCSA and then the hosts.

Since the "new" install of venter, and adding the hosts into the new cluster, if I try to remediate hosts to perform updates, the status just sits at around 33% doing nothing, and the host never goes into Maintenance mode.

After trying different things, it seems that I have to manually disable HA.  Once done, the host will happily go into maintenance mode and remediate.

Then if I manually enable HA, all is good.

I only have vSphere Essentials so no DRS option available, but in the remediate settings, everything is set for Disable.

Any ideas?

Under 5.5, the disabling of HA was automatic, so I literally hit remediate and off it went.

Hi All.

I have 2 Data Centers, each one with a vCenter instance, and I'd like to migrate both to vCenter 6.5, but now I want to use a SINGLE SSO DOMAIN, what is the correct migration path?

Regards.

unable to invoke installation due to vcsa is not ready check if rpm installation is completed

Good day, one and all.

I'm trying to set up an ESXi small lab (2 x 8GB PC towers).  VCSA VM has been spun up, as well as a domain controller VM.  From the DC, I browse to https://vcsavm:5480 and go through the setup steps.  After a long time of it sitting on 'Waiting for RPM Installation to finish (% done.)', it eventually concludes with 'unable to invoke installation due to vcsa is not ready check if rpm installation is completed'.  ('% Done' never features an actual number, so I figure it doesn't even kick off.)

Yes, I know, even the smallest VCSA requirements state 10GB RAM.  However, having made it this far, I hoped that I had passed the 'hardcoded' minimum.  Also, looking at ESXi resources, both CPU and RAM are lightly used thus far.

Please advise if and how I may proceed with this lab setup.

No email notifications of new patches since upgrade to 6.5

Since moving from a windows venter instance of venter 5.5 to an appliance version of 6.5U1 the update manager no longer email me when new patches have been downloaded.

I have the UM downloading from

https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml

https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/csco-main/csco-depot-index.xml

http://vapp-updates.vmware.com/vai-catalog/index.xml

http://vmwaredepot.dell.com/index.xml

The download schedule is set to daily and the notification check runs every hour.

When I remember to check I can see new patches, but am not being notified.

The email side seems to work as I get error email through.

Any ideas?

I just installed the Security Update 2018-003 for El Capitan and now when I launch my vms it says "Unable to retrieve kernel symbols".  How can I fix this?

VMware Workstation 14 Pro grinds to a halt on Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS

An observation that VMware Workstation 14 Pro - of any release so far - seems to eventually grind to a halt on my Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS system.  NVIDIA 390.48 driver, X.Org 1.19.5, GeForce GT 640, 16GB of system RAM, i7-3770, 'awesome' window manager.

The 14.1.1 release saw the thing eating an entire core constantly to draw the UI;  14.1.2 has reduced this somewhat, but eventually, the UI becomes mostly unresponsive and has to be kill -9'd.  Launching vmware again leads to a responsive UI for a few hours until it has to be killed again.

I usually have a lone Windows 7 VM running;  it doesn't seem to be affected (but the Workstation 14 UI surrounding the VM console is slow / dead in responding to clicks).

I didn't have these problems with Workstation 12 on the same system.

Workstation 14.1.2 - Unable to install VMware tools in Windows 7 Guest

The installer cheerfully removed the previous version of the tools, then failed with a message that it could not install the SVGA driver.  There's a quick message about my needing to install manually, then the system resets back to a cold boot.  When restarted, I have no installed tools.  Repeat, rinse...

Any way to recover back to the previous level?  It was showing me the little yellow "..need to update" icon, but at least it was working.

Reloaded host OS and now VM can't access any network shares

I reloaded the host computer's OS (Windows 10) and now my VM can't access any network shares.  I have shares on the Windows 10 host and also shares on a Linux NAS that are all inaccessible.  Other computers can access these shares as before.

I can ping the host (by name) from the VM but it's strange that I can't access any network shares..."Windows cannot access \\Computer".

I had used the NAT option and also Bridged--all without success.

Any ideas?

VMware Workstation - WDS PXE UEFI

Hello All

Been banging my head a against this problem for a couple days now.

I'm trying to get a VM to spin up on VMworkstation 14.1.2 using UEFI boot and install Windows 10, via WDS. My WDS server also a workstation vm on the same host, which works perfectly deploying to BIOS based vm's.

In the create a new VM wizard on Workstation i have selected windows 10 and UEFI boot. Ensured its on the right network but when it trys to PXE boot it just says:

>>Start PXE over IPv4.

It then just returns me to the boot menu to select hdd, cd or network. I also tried loading the win10 iso into the vm's virtual cd drive and tried to boot with UEFI and i have the same problem.

I have read numerous forum posts, one said you need to add DHCP options 66 & 67 which i did but had not effect. And as mentioned above i load the win10 "cd" to its local "cd drive" and it still couldnt boot UEFI.

Driving me crazy now!!

Can anyone offer any ideas??

Its a very basic network setup that i have created just to test the fundamentals of WDS, which is list below: Both servers are domain joined and are VM's on Workstation 14.1.2 all on the same network (VMNET02) on the same host

Server 2012: DC with DHCP and DNS

Server 2012: WDS

Thanks in advance

Hi,

i reinstalled ESXI and formatted the internal Hard-Drives to Raid 5.

Now when i want add this Datastore i get the following Error message:

Failed to create VMFS datastore DISK - Cannot change the host configuration.

The Disk is also marked as Normal, Degraded (referring to some internet posts its normal for some HP Servers and just a visual error)

The last time i installed it on the same server there where no problem!

What i've done so far:

- Reinstallled ESXI (on external USB Drive)

- Formated the Hard-Drives to Raid 6 (ADG) (last time this server was running with that configuration)

What can i do?

High Sierra and Fusion "stuck" keys

$

Hi to all,

inside the Windows VM, sometimes when I strike Ctrl+c, some seconds after I release the key combination it results in typing repeatedly "cccccccccccccc..." or after having struck Ctrl+v it results in "vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv..." and it doesn't stop until I press another key. It happens with the delete key or the tab key, too.

This happens very frequently (an average of once every 2 - 3 minutes, but it can happen twice in a minute or more) but randomly and in combination with a "special key" (i.e. Ctrl, Delete, End, Backslash, etc.) and is VERY, VERY annoying.

Almost every time that this happens, I noticed that when I press the ESC key, it opens up the Windows Start Menu.

To "re-enable" a (temporary) correct working state of the keyboard, I have to repeatedly press ESC, then repeatedly press CTRL, then repeatedly press the Windows key, then repeatedly press the ALT key. After that, I can continue working for a couple of minutes befor it happens again

It started happening as I upgraded to High Sierra (from El Capitan) and to Fusion 10.0.0 (and it's upgrade to 10.0.1) from fusion 8.x.

I later downgraded to Fusion 8.5.8 (ev. upgraded to 8.5.9) to resolve the CAPS LOCK issue, but this one remained, unfortunately.

In the meantime I have upgraded Windows 10 on both my VMs to version 1709 (OS build 16299.64) from Version 1703 (OS build 15063.674), but the issue remains.

This is making me NUTS, I cannot work anymore and I am a bit desperate.

This issue seems only to happen inside the VMs, not in the Mac host.

I already tried switching keyboard with a Mac one (usb), but the problem stays the same.

I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling last version of vmware Tools, with no success

I already tried searching on the internet for a solution, but until now, no tweak has worked for me.

Can someone help me, please?

View Composer Agent Initialization State Error 16

Hi

I’ve got a weird issue of late with composing my View 6.21 floating pool desktops. I get the error message:

View Composer agent initialization state error (16) : Failed to activate license (waited 0 seconds).

I’ve made no changes to my environment.  The really strange thing is I left the pool alone and the VDI VMs became available with no action on my part!

Most everything I see on this points to KMS and parent VM settings.  I have not altered the parent image for several months.  I’m also using the same snapshot that I used to compose the VMs months ago so not sure if the license stuff if something I should be looking into.

If in fact, there was an issue with the parent image I’d expect it to consistently fail to provision and not come good on its own.

Any clues what might be happening?  I recall VMware mentioning something about CBT.  Best practice is to have this disabled, but I haven’t done that yet with this pool.

thanks

Support for guest hibernation

Hi.

I'm developing a driver and one of the automated tests I need to run tests that the driver behaves correctly when the system hibernates and then comes back up. So far all of the virtualization solutions I've tried either don't support this (VirtualBox, Hyper-V) or don't work quite correctly (Workstation).

Does vSphere support guest hibernation?

Thanks.

DNAT - one ip address serving multiple servers

$

Hello Folks...

I am in the process of creating a bubble network behind a ESG to support development, etc...There will be a number of vms created in this bubble network, so we would like to explore using SNAT and DNAT to conserve IP addresses.  SNAT is relatively straight forward, going to assign a IP address for SNAT so all VMs south of the ESG and access the network north of the ESG.

Question is for DNAT.  Is it possible utilizing the ESG to use a single IP address to provide connectivity to multiple servers using port address translation?
