How ESXi handles the Network requests of Guest vm's?

I am quite clear how the VMM handles and schedules the CPU and Memory for guest vm's.

But I am quite vague when it comes to handling of network requests of Guest VM's.

Appreciate if someone could explain how ESXi handles the Network requests from Guest OS's.
