Hello,
I have a HP DL385 Gen8 Server with 2 CPU and 16 Cores per Socket and 192 GB RAM.
We use VMware vSphere 5.1 Enterprise Plus.
As Hardware we use the internal HP P420i SAS Controller and we have 25 HP 2,5 SFF 300 GB Harddrivers with 10k attached.
Now I would like to get the most out of the maschine, hosting as much MS Server 2012 as I can.
The Configuration is always the same, 1 vCore, 2 GB RAM and 40 GB for the Operation System.
On the Server there are 1-3 people working per machine at most with standard office stuff like Thunderbird, OpenOffice, and some Invoicing Software nothing heavy, almost no load.
From my experiance I would go with a Raid 10, right?
If I use a Raid 10 I can use 24 drives and 1 Hot Spare.
Now my question. What makes sense. 2 x 12 drives Raid 10 or 24 drives Raid 10 or maybe 24 drives Raid5?
How many LUNs should I create and how many servers should I place into a LUN to take care or SCSI reservations?
What is your best practise and what do you think how many maschines can go onto that server?
Would you limit the IOPS on the VM and if yes, would 250 IOPS per VM be enough.
Thank you in advance.
I really appriciate your help on that issue.
Regards,
Dino
