Use datastore cluster or RAID on a single host

Greetings,

I have a single ESXI 5.1 host with 3 hard drives, 1 TB each. I'd like to reserve 1 hard drive for temporary VMs that I'd be deploying from templates. The other 2 I want to use for the permanent VMs and templates. I don't need 2 TB of storage, and I'd like to improve performance, have some redundancy, and make it easier for folks who create VMs and get confused when asked which datastore they want to store their VM. Those priorities aren't really in any order of preference.

So I figure I can either RAID 1 the first two hard drives, or I can set them up as a datastore cluster. My host does have hardware RAID.

Suggestions?

Edit -- I think my host actually has Firmware RAID...not really sure what that is. Intel Matrix Storage Manager.

Thank you.

Matthew
