How to disable 'Workstation Server Settings'?

Setup:

MacBook running Ubuntu 13.04 and VMware Workstation 9.0.2 build-1031769

Problem:

Go into Preferences select 'Shared VMs' and then try to remove the check for 'Enable virtual machine sharing and remote access'

I then see some messages below the Shared VMs Location the messages go by quick but they are:

Shutting down Workstation Server...

Connecting to Workstation Server...

Loading Storage information...

The check mark remains for 'Enable virtual machine sharing and remote access'.

I thought maybe I have to do this as root so I open a terminal and do 'su -' then from the root account enter 'vmware'. Now as root this is what I see for 'Shared VMs'

Find it strange the the root account is 'Unable to connect to the Workstation Server'. Now as root I can do '/etc/init.d/vmware-workstation-server stop' which does stop the service but I really think this is something I should be able to turn off in the Preferences after all there is the check box. Anyone?
