Hallo,
I have a server in my homelab that I use for VMsphere studies and I want to get a second machine to test advanced features like HA, Vmotion etc.
My first server has an X9SCM-9 board with Xeon E3-1230V2 (Ivy Bridge) CPU. I currently run ESX 5.0 U2 on it.
I was planning on getting consumer grade hardware for the second host as I don't want to spend a lot on it so I thought I need any CPU from the Ivy Bridge generation.
I tested now with a second machine with a Pentium G2020 Ivy Bridge, but when I try to Vmotion it says "The VM requires Hardware features that are not available or deactivated on the host...".
So I figure there has to be a difference in architecture regardless of the CPU beeing an Ivy Bridge CPU.
When I try to enable EVC it only let's me go to "Nehalem" Version so my VMs running on host 1 wouldn't be able to use all CPU features from the Xeon.
So the question comes down to: What is the cheapest CPU that offers EVC L5 compatibility?
Or is there anything else to consider regarding VMotion between two hosts with different CPUs?
I got shared storage, same network setup etc.
Thanks,
Benjamin
